SUMMARY:Mapping the Ground We Stand On
DESCRIPTION:An Education for Reconciliation Workshop \nEstablished in 1959\, Alongside Hope is the development and relief agency of the Anglican Church of Canada. Working mainly with partners overseas\, since 1969 it has also worked in partnership with Indigenous communities in Canada on community development and cultural recovery projects. This “education for reconciliation” workshop explores Indigenous presence and Settler arrival on the map of Turtle Island/Canada. It also examines the “Doctrine of Discovery\,” the concept of terra nullius (empty land) and Indigenous knowledge.\nUsing video and PowerPoint resources\, Mapping the Ground We Stand On at Kilrush Heritage Week\, will offer participants an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Canada’s history and present\, based on what we place on and leave off of the Canadian map. It will also provide opportunity to explore what a “mapping exercise” might look like for Ireland\, and specifically for West Clare. For this\, we will use an Indigenous Talking Circle method\, allowing all who wish to speak\, an opportunity\, and we will explore questions such as: “What is your family’s history of presence on the Irish map? How and where do you understand yourself to be present on the map today? How do we tell the part of the Canadian story that includes Irish immigration to Canada (mentioned briefly in the Mapping Exercise)? What and who needs to appear on the Irish map to enable a deeper understanding of Ireland’s history and present?” \nAdmission is free. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Keith Donald: Music and Mayhem
DESCRIPTION:Join legendary musician\, Keith Donald\, for a one-man show of readings and music as he launches his memoir\, ‘Music and Mayhem’\, at Banner Books Kilrush. \nKeith Donald is a renowned saxophone and clarinet player who has played with some of the biggest names in Irish music\, including Van Morrison\, Ronnie Drew\, Moving Hearts and Christy Moore. Music and Mayhem charts the immersive and explosive life of one of Ireland’s most important musicians\, and the golden decade of Irish music he was at the very centre of. \nKeith Donald’s story begins in Unionist East Belfast\, hurtling through vivid memories of a childhood as a musical prodigy\, first performing at the BBC aged ten. His story takes him to the classics department of Trinity College Dublin in the early 60s\, a hotbed of new ideas\, before he becomes enveloped in the beauty of tenor sax. Playing at jazz clubs by night and studying classics by day\, Donald soon felt the early onset of alcohol addiction\, fuelled by childhood PTSD. \nThe 70s saw Donald building a music career in Dublin and Europe\, coping with addiction\, a crumbling marriage\, and forging a separate life as a qualified social worker. It was the 1980s however\, when his greatest breakthrough came to pass with the formation of the Celtic rock supergroup Moving Hearts. \nVideo; Moving Hearts\, ‘Titanic’ \nWith the Moving Hearts Donald was tour manager\, star performer and inspiration\, alongside bandmates including Christy Moore and Donal Lunny. Their fusion of jazz\, rock and traditional music created the soundtrack of an era and paved the way for a generation of Irish musicians. \n“Not only is Keith’s book ‘Music & Mayhem’ a brilliant read about an amazing and important time in Ireland’s musical history\, he also gives an electrifying\, spellbinding short performance about his battles with his addictions that is compelling and ultimately triumphant. Highly recommended.” Vinny Browne\, Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop \n“A beautiful and engaging production\, underpinned by a narrative bursting with honesty and a performance delivery of the highest quality.” The Arts Council of Northern Ireland

SUMMARY:Author Teatime with Eilís Haden-Storrie
DESCRIPTION:Join local author Eilís to talk about her new book\, ‘These Intangible Things’\, published by Banner Books.\nWe are very excited to see our first Banner Books publication go to print\, and we are especially pleased to be working with local author\, Eilís Haden-Storrie\, and illustrator Peter Goossens. Could the wisdom of the past offer us a way towards a more holistic understanding of health and healing? The conversations in this book ask that question of scholars\, healers\, and those whose lives reflect the challenges of our time\, and consider what it means to truly heal.\nFor anyone that couldn’t make it to the Burren College of Art for the launch of this beautiful book\, this is another opportunity to meet Eilís\, find out about her own incredible health journey and join this healing conversation.

SUMMARY:Open Mic Social hosted by Frank Golden
DESCRIPTION:The monthly open mic social at our Kilrush shop is a free event\, open to all.\nFor lovers of poetry\, flash fiction and any kind of creative writing. Come to read from your own work or to share a favourite piece by another writer\, or come to listen and support.\nTea\, coffee\, and treats provided. This is a free event\, but there will be a ‘Tip Jar’ if you would like to donate towards expenses.\nPoet Frank Golden has also published two novels\, and has received numerous bursaries\, awards\, and residencies. He lives in the Oughtmama Valley\, County Clare.\nHe will be reading from ‘IF YOU TOLERATE THIS’\, his sixth collection of poems.\nIF YOU TOLERATE THIS is a wide ranging work in six parts which nails its geo-political colours to the mast\, and casts a misanthropic eye over the whole morass. Failure and the blighted realities of both entitled and marginalised lives suffuse sections of the book devoted to Fordlandia\, Henry Ford\, lives in states of crisis in Central America and the Middle East. Poems concerned with eco dynamics not only dominate section 5 but inform the book as a whole. IF YOU TOLERATE THIS ends with poems that Golden wrote as he back-packed through Iran in 2019\, together with a poem that admixes the death of Gaddafi and the experiences of the poet’s father in Libya during the Second World War. This is a book with a large cast of characters\, both familiar and new\, who are as riven and corruptive as the age we live in.\nPraise for Golden’s last book of poems\, ‘GOTTA GET A MESSAGE TO YOU’ (SalmonPoetry)\n“Golden is a poet to get excited about… This is a startling and exciting collection.”Afric McGlinchy/Southward Journal\n“I have rarely been so moved by a book of poems.” Grace Wells/Fur\n“A fantastic new collection by Irish poet Frank Golden. It has floored me like no book of poetry has in a long time. Golden has an uncanny ability to touch on the things that move us most deeply.” Phil Hanrahan/Bookish Review
